Maintaining clean bins during summer

Summer in Sydney is notoriously hot. Long sunny days combined with temperatures that can reach over 40 degrees, this time of year can cause havoc to your bins.

Here are some ways to help you keep your bins from being cooked this summer:
  1. Ensure your bins are not stored or located in direct sunlight. If your bins can’t be kept out of direct sunlight, try to place them out of as much sunlight as possible.
  2. If possible, make sure that all rubbish going into your bins is in a tightly sealed bag.
  3. Try to bring your bins in from the curb (post collection) as soon as possible. This is for two reasons: first is to get your bin out of the direct sunlight and second is to avoid by-passers leaving their rubbish in your bin(s).
  4. Avoid putting organic waste into your bins until at least a day before your bin(s) go out to the curb for collection. The best method for this is to put your organic waste in a tightly sealed bag and place them in the freezer until bin night.
  5. Have your bins cleaned professionally. By doing this you will ensure that the bacteria, vermin and oder that has been building up in and around your bins through out the week, do not compound. During heat waves some bins require cleaning at least twice a month to ensure freshness. Click here to book you bin clean today!

DO NOTS
  1. Miss your bin night. Having rubbish in your bin for longer than a week will make it very difficult to keep you bins clean and even more difficult to keep vermin and rodents away
  2. Use air fresheners. While this seams counter-intuitive, it will only mask the problem. Bacteria, vermin and cockroaches will still thrive only making the problem worse.
  3. Clean your bins and emptying the water down the drain. This is an obvious one, but still needs to be mentioned.
  4. Using bin liners for your bins (especially the recycling bins). While it will help with ensuring that rubbish doesn’t touch the bins, it will only add to the plastic bag problem we are currently having. If you tie your current bags so they are sealed properly, there will be no need for a liner.
