Maintaining clean bins during summer

Summer in Sydney is notoriously hot. Long sunny days combined with temperatures reaching over 40 degrees, this time of year can cause havoc to your bins.

Here are some ways to help you keep your bins from being cooked this summer:
  1. Ensure your bins are not stored or located in direct sunlight. If your bins can’t be kept out of direct sunlight, try to place them out of as much sunlight as possible.
  2. If possible, put all rubbish into your bins in a tightly sealed bag.
  3. bring your bins in from the curb (post collection) as soon as possible. This is to keep your bin out of direct sunlight and to avoid by-passers leaving their rubbish in your bin(s).
  4. Avoid putting organic waste into your bins until at least a day before your bin(s) go out to the curb for collection. The best method is to put your organic waste in a tightly sealed bag and place it in the freezer until the night.
  5. Have your bins cleaned professionally. This will prevent the bacteria, vermin, and other debris that has been building up in and around your bins throughout the week from compounding. During heat waves, some bins require cleaning at least twice a month to ensure freshness. Click here to book your bin clean today!

DO NOTS
  1. Miss your bin night. Having rubbish in your bin for longer than a week will make it very difficult to keep your bins clean and even more challenging to keep vermin and rodents away
  2. Use air fresheners. While this seems counterintuitive, it will only mask the problem. Bacteria, vermin, and cockroaches will still thrive, only making the problem worse.
  3. Clean your bins and emptying the water down the drain. This is an obvious one, but it still needs to be mentioned.
  4. Use bin liners (especially for the recycling bins). While this will help ensure that rubbish doesn’t touch the bins, it will only add to the plastic bag problem we are currently having. If you tie your current bags so they are sealed properly, there will be no need for a liner.
